Towards Effective User-Guided Robot Search

چکیده
In recent years there has been a growing interest amongst Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) researchers in the usage of robotic systems for exploration or search missions [6, 3, 4]. In the traditional approach to robot supervision by humans, knows as camera guided teleoperation [3], the operator navigates the robot while interpreting camera imagery. Both tasks require constant attention, and contribute to operator’s workload. Automating the robot navigation task, as suggested in [5], is one possible step to reduce workload. Another step is to eliminate the need to view live video, thus turning the interface to use asynchronous video. Recent work [3] on multi-robot interfaces investigated the usage of asynchronous operation schemes in the context of Urban Search And Rescue (USAR) missions [2]. With the asynchronous approach, robots explore the environment autonomously, while the operator is presented with recorded imagery (asynchronous) from the robots’ camera, rather than live imagery (synchronous). Asynchronous interfaces have several advantages. First, scaling up the number of robots is easier, since the operator no longer has to observe live video feeds from multiple robots. This can help to reduce operator’s workload when the number of robots is increased [4]. Moreover, communication constraints can limit the ability to stream live video from the robots and to control them in real-time. This could severely affect the operator’s ability to extract useful information and maintain spatial orientation [1]. With the asynchronous approach however, transmission of recorded

متن کاملIntelligent User Interface for Multi-Robot Search
Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is an important part of many robotic systems, in particular systems designed for search or exploration missions. The traditional HRI methods of controlling a single robot by an operator have their shortcomings, for example the need to continuously monitor a live (synchronous) video display. When the number of robots in the system increases, the traditional methods ...
متن کاملTowards learning through robotic interaction alone: the joint guided search task
This work proposes a biologically inspired approach that focuses on attention systems that are able to inhibit or constrain what is relevant at any one moment. We propose a radically new approach to making progress in human-robot joint attention called “the joint guided search task”. Visual guided search is the activity of the eye as it saccades from position to position recognizing objects in ...
متن کاملHow can a tour guide robot’s orientation influence visitors’ orientation and formations?
In this paper, we describe a field study with a tour guide robot that guided visitors through a historical site. Our focus was to determine how a robot’s orientation behaviour influenced visitors’ orientation and the formations groups of visitors formed around the robot. During the study a remotecontrolled robot gave short guided tours and explained some points of interest in the hall of Festiv...
متن کاملImage flip CAPTCHA
The massive and automated access to Web resources through robots has made it essential for Web service providers to make some conclusion about whether the "user" is a human or a robot. A Human Interaction Proof (HIP) like Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart (CAPTCHA) offers a way to make such a distinction. CAPTCHA is a reverse Turing test used by Web serv...
